Abstract
This essay asks whether classical Chinese conceptions of nature can offer guidance in the age of the Anthropocene, when human activity has altered the planet on a geological scale and the oppositions between man and nature, and between natural and cultural sciences, are losing their meaning. Drawing on Heidegger, the author criticises the dominance of modern technological metaphysics and the dichotomous thinking that turns humanity into the master of nature. He contrasts this with ancient Chinese philosophy, in which human essence is defined through relationship and technology serves as a tool of lived experience rather than of violence, and discusses contemporary China’s environmental policies, including “Made in China 2025”. The central sections analyse three key concepts: ziran (naturalness) in Daoist texts; tian (heaven), which gradually shifted from the ancestral spirits of a dynasty to “nature”; and xing (human nature). Special attention is given to The Book of Changes and its Neo-Confucian reinterpretation by Zhou Dunyi, in which culture and nature are inseparable. The author concludes that an intercultural environmental ethics must avoid distorting Chinese traditions through Western categories, since in Chinese culture protecting nature is inseparable from protecting one’s own culture.
