Shanshui Magazine – Guidelines for Submission

1. Scope of the Journal

Shanshui Magazine welcomes scholarly articles, essays, artistic reflections, translations, visual projects, and interdisciplinary research related (but not limited) to the following themes:

  • Shanshui studies and Chinese landscape traditions
  • Environmental aesthetics and ecological art
  • Cross-cultural dialogues between Chinese and Western art
  • History of China–Europe cultural exchanges
  • Artistic research, curatorial studies, and contemporary art practices
  • Traditional ecological knowledge and global sustainability
  • Plant migration, ethnobotany, and Chinese herbal medicine in contemporary contexts

Both academic and practice-based submissions are accepted.

2. Submission Process

Submissions should be sent to: info@shanshuiprojects.net

Please include in your email:

  • The manuscript (Word or PDF file)
  • A 150–200 word abstract
  • A short author biography (50–100 words)
  • Up to 5 keywords
  • Any images, figures, or supplementary materials

The editorial board acknowledges receipt within 7 days.

3. Peer Review

  • The journal adopts a double-blind peer-review system for scholarly articles.
  • Essays, artistic texts, creative works or translations may undergo editorial review instead of formal peer review.
  • Authors will receive reviewer comments and decisions (accept, revise, or reject).
  • Revised manuscripts must address reviewers’ feedback clearly and concisely.

4. Manuscript Format

4.1 Length

  • Articles: 4,000–8,000 words
  • Short essays: 1,500–3,500 words
  • Creative writing or artistic statements: 800–2,500 words
  • Book or exhibition reviews: 1,000–2,000 words
  • Translations: length varies; include original text when possible

4.2 Formatting Requirements

  • File format: .docx
  • Font: Times New Roman or similar, 12 pt
  • Footnotes preferred over endnotes
  • References may follow Chicago style (notes-bibliography)

4.3 Images and Visual Material

  • Submit images separately as .jpg or .png, minimum 200 dpi (300 dpi preferred)
  • Provide captions + credits
  • Ensure you have permission to publish copyrighted images

5. Ethics and Integrity

All submissions must comply with the Shanshui Magazine Ethical Code, including:

  • No plagiarism or self-plagiarism
  • Proper citation of sources
  • Disclosure of conflicts of interest
  • Compliance with ethical standards for research
  • Proper consent for images, data, and interviews

The journal investigates all reports of misconduct.

6. Copyright and Licensing

6.1 License

The journal exclusively adopts the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC-BY 4.0) license for all published works.

6.2 License attributes

The only required attribute is Attribution: users must credit the original authors and source appropriately.

6.3 Author rights

Authors retain full copyright and publishing rights. No restrictions are imposed on authors beyond the terms of the CC-BY 4.0 license.

7. After Acceptance

  • Authors receive proofs before publication.
  • Only minor corrections (typos, formatting) are allowed at this stage.
  • Articles are published online in open access and remain freely downloadable.

8. Post-Publication

  • Authors and readers may submit letters or responses for discussion.
  • Any corrections or updates are transparently communicated.

9. Archiving Policy

The journal ensures long-term preservation of its content through the following service:

  • Internet Archive

All published materials are stored and publicly accessible for permanent preservation.

The journal does not charge fees for publishing an article.
