Abstract
Taking as its starting point Italo Calvino’s “Hypothesis of Description of a Landscape” (1986), this essay argues that mountain and water painting functions more like a written narrative than like Western landscape painting. Calvino observes that describing a landscape in words unfolds in time, through a moving subject and multiple viewpoints, whereas painting and photography fix space in a single instant. The author contends that Western landscape art, governed by focal perspective and an anthropocentric gaze, remains bound to that instantaneity, while the shanshui painter walks through and studies an environment from near and far and then composes it through multiplied perspectives. Consequently, the viewer cannot grasp the work in one glance but must travel within it. Texts by Zong Bing, Gu Kaizhi and Guo Xi support this reading, as does the handscroll format, which is unrolled section by section like the pages of a book. A close reading of Guo Xi’s Early Spring (1072) traces the paths, travellers, fishermen, temples and openings that lead the eye through several stories in progress. The essay concludes that such painting requires time and involvement, and offers the viewer a spiritual journey without leaving the room.
